What Happened to WBTC?356
WBTC, or Wrapped Bitcoin, is an ERC-20 token that represents Bitcoin (BTC) on the Ethereum blockchain. It was created in January 2019 by BitGo, a digital asset custody provider, and has since become the most popular way to use Bitcoin on Ethereum.
WBTC is backed 1:1 by BTC, meaning that for every WBTC in circulation, there is one BTC held in reserve by BitGo. This ensures that the value of WBTC is always tied to the value of BTC.
WBTC has a number of advantages over using BTC directly on Ethereum. First, it is much faster and cheaper to transfer WBTC than BTC. Second, WBTC can be used with a wider range of Ethereum-based applications and services. Third, WBTC is more secure than BTC, as it is stored in a multi-signature wallet that requires multiple approvals before any funds can be moved.
Despite its advantages, WBTC has also been the subject of some controversy. In August 2019, it was revealed that BitGo had been hacked and $6 million worth of WBTC was stolen. This led to a temporary loss of confidence in WBTC, but the token has since recovered its value.
In October 2020, BitGo announced that it would be transferring the custody of WBTC to a new custodian, Anchorage. This move was made to further enhance the security of WBTC. The transfer of custody was completed in December 2020, and WBTC is now held in a multi-signature wallet that requires the approval of both BitGo and Anchorage before any funds can be moved.
WBTC continues to be the most popular way to use Bitcoin on Ethereum. It is a safe, fast, and convenient way to access the benefits of both Bitcoin and Ethereum. The future of WBTC looks bright, as it is likely to continue to grow in popularity as the Ethereum ecosystem matures.
